Cenotes, lagoons, ancient archaeological sites, coral reefs, and dream beaches where you can enjoy local cuisine. We all know Cancun, Riviera Maya, Tulum, or Playa del Carmen, but the Mexican Caribbean hides more secrets.

Isla Mujeres, Holbox, Puerto Morelos, Cozumel, Maya Ka’an, Mahahual, Bacalar, and Chetumal share a unique natural, archaeological, gastronomic, and cultural heritage, as well as a great offer for relaxation and adventure.

What better way to explore this coastal paradise than on a scenic road trip where you can plan your route and itinerary? The suggested itinerary below includes car rental and accommodation at the main stops along the route.

Are you up for the experience? The various suggested excursions and visits are for guidance only, so if there is any detail you would prefer to change, Viajes El Corte Inglés can help you design a trip adapted to your tastes and needs.

Day 1: Cancun

The starting point is Cancun, where you can also stay for the first days of your trip.

Along the 22 km of coastline, you will find beaches for all tastes, some of them large and lively, with waves for surfers, while others are more protected and quiet. Don’t miss the archaeological site of El Rey in the Hotel Zone.

The Hotel Zone of Cancun, shopping, and nightlife will not leave you indifferent. Coco Bongo is one of the most famous local nightclubs, although there are smaller venues where you can enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere.

Day 2: Visit Isla Mujeres from Cancun

Isla Mujeres is a tiny island that can only be accessed by ferry from Cancun.

Relax in Playa Norte, watch sea turtles, and swim with whale sharks. Don’t miss a visit to Garrafon Park, an ideal place for snorkeling, as its waters are not too deep and are full of bizarre reefs and colorful aquatic species.

You can also go kayaking or bathe in a temazcal (a traditional sauna).

The cliffs of Punta Sur are a sight to behold, especially at dawn. Nearby are the archaeological remains of the Temple of the Mayan goddess Ixchel, which gave the island its name before the Spanish colonists discovered it.

Rent a golf cart to get around the island. It is worth stopping at the Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA), where 500 sculptures are submerged underwater, although you can access it from both Isla Mujeres and Cancun.

Taste local cuisine, based on fish and seafood.

Return to Cancun.

Day 3: Visit the Isla Holbox from Cancun

Holbox is a small island, without asphalt, of only 40 km wide and 1,5 km long, located on the north coast of the Yucatán Peninsula. There are no cars in Holbox, and visitors can only get around on foot, by golf cart, or by bicycle.

One of the main and popular attractions of Holbox Island is its bioluminescent sea, and Punta Cocos Beach is the best place to enjoy this amazing phenomenon that makes the water glow with every movement.

Punta Mosquito is a partially accessible white sand bank with panoramic views.

Isla Holbox is home to pink flamingos, pelicans, and other exotic birds, and the more adventurous can rent a kayak and explore its mangroves. The Holbox Island is also home to whale sharks.

Just a 30-minute boat ride from Holbox is the Yalahau Cenote (Ojo de Agua), a place with fresh water that, according to ancient legend, has strange properties: diving into its waters will make you feel 10 years younger.

Don’t forget to try one of the most typical dishes, lobster pizza.

Return to Cancun.

Day 4: Puerto Morelos, Xel-Há or Xcaret

Leaving Cancun behind head to the next destination – Playa del Carmen.

Halfway there, stop in Puerto Morelos, a small fishing village, known for the Puerto Morelos Reef National Park. The underwater site is part of the Mesoamerican Reef. Its leaning lighthouse and beach are worth a visit.

Another option is to visit Xel-Há, considered one of the largest natural aquariums in the world. Take an underwater walk. On the surface, you can visit some Mayan remains – such as the Bird Building.

Xcaret Park could be another alternative plan: a tropical forest, a Mayan village, a museum, an aquarium, a butterfly garden, a sea turtle pool or an aviary are some of the activities you can do there.

Continue to Playa del Carmen where you will find a lot of accommodation options.

Day 5: Playa del Carmen and Cozumel

Playa del Carmen is an area with frenetic activity. Located in the heart of the Riviera, this cozy resort town combines natural beauty, culture, and fun. Its Fifth Avenue is famous, full of shops and restaurants.

Visit Cozumel, the largest island in Mexico. Cozumel is located about 19 km off the coast of Playa del Carmen. To get there, you’ll need to take a ferry from Playa del Carmen to San Miguel de Cozumel, the island’s main town.

Discover the boardwalk and Plaza del Sol in San Miguel.

Visit the Punta Sur National Park and Ecological Reserve and enjoy a beautiful panoramic view from its lighthouse, soak up Mayan culture at the island museum and the jungle-surrounded archaeological sites of San Gervasio.

Cozumel is a paradise for diving lovers, as it has more than 40 diving spots.

Delight in the local cuisine, where lionfish, prepared in ceviche, grilled or breaded with coconut, is the star.

Return to Playa del Carmen.

Day 6: Tulum from Playa del Carmen

Drive an hour south from Playa del Carmen to the famous ruins of Tulum. Between the 13th and 14th centuries, this was one of the main Mayan cities and an important port, so its archaeological remains are located next to the sea.

This region is full of cenotes, lagoons, underground rivers, and white-sand beaches.

This area has a variety of ecosystems (jungle, tropical, wetland, savannah, and sea) inhabited by more than 2,000 species of plants, 345 species of birds and 70 species of mammals, as well as turtles, crocodiles, and iguanas.

Return to Playa del Carmen.

Day 7: From Playa del Carmen to Mahahual

Three and a half hours separate Playa del Carme from Mahahual, your next destination on this road trip. It’s another of the best areas for diving in the Mexican Caribbean, as it has the Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve.

The largest of Mexico’s coral atoll is located here. The bottom of the Banco Chinchorro Biosphere Reserve contains the remains of Spanish and English ships from the 16th and 17th centuries that perished in its waters.

Mahahual is also famous for its paradisiacal beaches.

After a hard day of sightseeing, and adventures, the best thing to do is relax in one of the local restaurants on the Mahahual Malecon (boardwalk) to enjoy local specialties such as ceviche, grilled fish, or tacos al pastor.

An hour’s drive away is the hidden city of Chacchobén in the middle of the jungle.

Day 8: From Mahahual to Chetumal

The next destination is Chetumal, a two-hour road drive from Mahahual.

Chetumal is the perfect contrast between the sea and the jungle. Its bay is a protected area, as it is home to numerous manatees (a native species of mammal that lives in the sea), birds, and marine fauna.

Take advantage of your stay here to tour the center, where you can visit its market, the cultural center of the Fine Arts, where you can see exhibitions and concerts, as well as stroll along the boardwalk and the bay.

Don’t forget to order a Machado or try its sea and jungle dish, stuffed shrimp or lobster with white wine, garlic, and butter.

Day 9: Day trip from Chetumal

Near the city, there are several archaeological sites of the Mayan culture, the closest being Oxtankah, but there are also others a little further away such as the archaeological sites of Kohunlich, Dzibanché, and Kinichná.

Return to Chetumal.

Day 10: Visit Bacalar and driving back to Riviera Maya

Start the day early with a visit to Bacalar, a peaceful and picturesque town around a 1.5-hour drive from Chetuma. Explore the Bacalar Lagoon with a boat tour, and swim in the crystalline waters of the Pirate’s Channel.

Take time to wander through the charming streets of Bacalar, where you can enjoy a quiet lunch overlooking the lagoon, and visit the Fort of San Felipe, a colonial-era fort built to protect the area from pirates.

Continue your journey back to Riviera Maya, which is about a 3-hour drive from Bacalar. You can end the trip with a relaxing evening at one of the Riviera Maya’s many beautiful beaches or a quiet dinner at a seaside restaurant.

Why summer is the best time to enjoy Cancun’s beaches? https://mexicanroutes.com/why-summer-is-the-best-time-to-enjoy-cancuns-beaches/ Fri, 25 Aug 2023 00:42:26 +0000 https://mexicanroutes.com/?p=14466 Cancun’s beaches have risen to popularity, drawing a multitude of travelers who eagerly converge upon this coastal haven, allured by the white-sand expanses that rank among the country’s finest.

In summer months, finding a calm relaxation on Cancun’s noisy beaches can seem like a daunting task, given the growing vacationer crowds reaching their zenith along the Mexican Caribbean.

But as the city slowly shifts its pace in anticipation of the impending calm that accompanies the autumn, Cancun’s pristine beaches are transforming into an idyllic place, offering a tranquil retreat in this tropical paradise.

Against this backdrop, it becomes clear that a stay in Cancun during the last summer and/or early autumn is a good choice, driven by a combination of factors that converge to create an unforgettable experience.

Here are 5 reasons why Cancun’s beaches are especially gorgeous in the summer.

Minimal amounts of sargassum

Sargassum, a persistent challenge for numerous destinations along the Mexican Caribbean coastline throughout this year, has notably exhibited reduced presence in Cancun over the recent weeks, marking an unusual decline in seaweed levels.

The most recent sargassum forecast affirms that all of Cancun’s pristine beaches are presently categorized as showcasing minimal quantities of sargassum during this specific week, presenting an optimistic outlook for beachgoers.

This current situation stands in stark contrast to earlier predictions made by experts earlier in the year, which painted a rather bleak picture of an impending record-breaking summer with regard to the sargassum influx.

Naturally, as is the case with all prognostications, shifts in circumstances are still plausible, underscoring the importance of travelers making the most of Cancun’s idyllic sargassum-free shorelines while favorable conditions persist.

Improved environmental standards make for quieter beaches

Lawmakers in Quintana Roo recently issued a new decree declaring Playa Deflines a Protected Natural Area. The move is intended to protect the flora and fauna at the popular beach, which holds up to 8% of all plant and animal species in the region.

As a result, businesses (including resorts, restaurants, and bars) will no longer be granted permission to break ground on the Blue-Flag beach. However, residents and travelers will still be able to enjoy the turquoise waters and powdery white sands.

The end of summer means fewer crowds

The busiest summer on record for tourism in Cancun and Riviera Maya is slowly coming to an end, with resorts expecting occupancy rates to begin falling as travelers head back home after their annual holidays.

July and early August are considered the peak periods of the summer season, with around 85% of all rooms selling out during that time. The end of August and September are generally much quieter, and typically only see a 60 to 65% occupancy rate.

Excellent safety thanks to summer security operations

Cancun is one of the safest destinations for travelers, with a significant law enforcement presence looking after tourists. That’s all the more so this summer with officially launching one of the most comprehensive security operations in history.

Hundreds of armed officers from the National Guard and even the Mexican Army are currently patrolling Cancun’s most touristy locations, ensuring that travelers can peacefully bask under the tropical heat.

Even so, visitors are advised to maintain a high degree of situation awareness, with petty crime still a major risk. Never leave your personal belongings unattended when enjoying Cancun’s beaches.

Endless outdoor activities

Cancun is a hotspot for all sorts of outdoor activities, many of which are best enjoyed on the city’s numerous white-sand beaches. A hub for paddle boarding, kitesurfing, and snorkeling, travelers can partake in both extreme sports as well as more easy-going ones.

Travelers can find an array of businesses specializing in waterspouts and gear rentals. Dotted along the city’s white sand beaches – especially in and around the hotel zone – visitors can try out plenty of new and unique activities.

One activity that has seen its popularity skyrocket this summer is catamaran boat tours. Allowing travelers to escape the crowds, these tours come in many different varieties.

A “luxury” budget of 3,800 MXN or more per day provides the opportunity to stay in a hotel, dine out at various establishments, enjoy plenty of drinks, utilize taxis or car rentals, and indulge in guided food or mezcal tours.

How to Get Around Cancun

Cancun offers various transportation options to help you navigate the city and explore the surrounding areas. Here are the different ways to get around in Cancun:

Public Transportation

The bus system in Cancun is efficient and operates 24 hours a day.

Bus fares are affordable, usually around 8.50 MXN per ride. It’s recommended to have exact change as drivers might not be able to break large bills. Buses provide a convenient way to travel within the city and to nearby attractions.

Taxis

Taxis in Cancun are not metered, but a general guideline for city-center travel is around 30 MXN. However, taxi fares can quickly add up and become expensive, so it’s advisable to consider other transportation options unless necessary.

Ridesharing

Uber operates in Cancun and is often a more cost-effective option compared to traditional taxis. Taking an Uber from the hotel zone to downtown Cancun, for example, can cost around 198 MXN.

Ridesharing services offer convenience and the ability to estimate fares in advance.

Bicycles

While Cancun may not be the most bicycle-friendly city, you can still rent bicycles if you prefer to explore on two wheels. Bike rentals typically range from 220-350 MXN per day.

Keep in mind that cycling conditions and infrastructure may vary, so it’s essential to exercise caution and choose suitable routes.

Car Rental

If you plan to venture beyond Cancun and explore the surrounding areas, renting a car can provide flexibility and convenience. Car rental prices in Cancun start at around 800 MXN per day.

International driver’s licenses are generally not required, but it’s always a good idea to check with the rental company beforehand. To find the best car rental prices, consider using platforms like Discover Cars.

Whether you choose public transportation, ridesharing, bicycles, or a rental car, Cancun offers options to suit different preferences and budgets. Select the transportation that best fits your needs and budget.

When to Go to Cancun

Cancun’s climate and tourism seasons play a significant role in determining the best time to visit. Here’s a breakdown of the different seasons and what to expect:

Summer (May to October)

Summer in Cancun marks the rainy season, with daily heavy but short-lived downpours.

Temperatures during this time range from 24-32°C. Despite the rain, this period can still be enjoyable, as the showers often pass quickly, and the tropical environment remains lush and vibrant.

Hurricane Season (August to November)

From the beginning of August to the end of November, Cancun experiences hurricane season.

This period is not ideal for visiting, as the risk of hurricanes and tropical storms is higher. It’s advisable to avoid travel during this time to ensure your safety and minimize disruptions to your plans.

Winter (December to April)

Winter is the peak tourist season in Cancun, attracting travelers from North America and Europe. The weather is pleasant, with average daily temperatures of around 28°C. This is an excellent time to visit if you want to enjoy Mexico’s tropical environment.

However, keep in mind that the hotel zone can get crowded, and prices tend to be higher during this period. If you’re on a budget, consider staying outside the hotel zone.

Spring Break (March to April)

Spring break brings a surge of college and university students to Cancun, making it one of the busiest times of the year. The atmosphere is lively and filled with parties. However, the beaches and accommodations can become extremely crowded.

Prices also spike during this period, particularly near the beach areas. Unless you’re specifically seeking the spring break experience, it’s recommended to avoid visiting Cancun during this time.

It’s important to note that if you plan to engage in activities in the ocean, such as snorkeling or diving, pack biodegradable sunscreen before your trip. Regular sunscreen is often not allowed due to its damaging effects on coral and water quality.

Some guides may inform you of this restriction only at the last minute, so it’s best to come prepared with environmentally friendly sunscreen.

Considering these factors, you can choose the best time to visit Cancun based on your preferences, weather conditions, and budget.

How to Stay Safe in Cancun

Cancun has long been a popular destination for tourists from North America and Europe.

Like in any tourist hotspot, the most common crimes here are pickpocketing and bag snatching. These incidents often occur in crowded areas or on the beach when you’re not paying close attention.

To stay safe, always keep your valuables secure and within your reach.

In general, dangerous crimes targeting tourists are rare in Cancun. Those who tend to be involved in incidents are usually engaged in drug-related activities or participating in sex tourism.

By avoiding these activities, you can significantly reduce your risks.

During busy periods like spring break, petty crime may increase. To protect yourself, never leave your drinks unattended, and remain vigilant about your valuables.

When using ATMs, it’s advisable to choose indoor locations and be cautious of your surroundings while withdrawing cash. If you’re concerned about potential scams, take the time to read up on common travel scams to avoid in the area.

Solo female travelers should generally feel safe in Cancun. However, it’s important to keep an eye on your drinks, avoid walking alone late at night in quiet areas, and remain alert.

While Cancun may not be the safest part of Mexico, following basic safety practices and being aware can minimize any potential risks. For more specific safety tips, consult the numerous solo female travel blogs that cover the city.

In case of an emergency, dial 911. However, since 911 isn’t available everywhere, it’s advisable to familiarize yourself with the local emergency number, which is 066 in Cancun.

Always trust your instincts and exercise caution.

Avoid isolated areas at night, refrain from wandering alone in unfamiliar places, and maintain awareness of your surroundings. Additionally, make copies of your important documents, including your passport and ID, for added security.

One crucial piece of advice is to purchase reliable travel insurance.

Travel insurance provides comprehensive protection against illness, injury, theft, and trip cancellations. It offers peace of mind and financial coverage in case anything goes wrong during your trip.

Travel insurance is recommended, as unforeseen circumstances can occur.

Last but not least, the Marigalante Pirate Ship hosts a swashbuckling battle, whilst you enjoy an action-packed adventure on the high seas.

Cancun – An Epic Family Getaway

Situated on the eastern part of the Yucatan peninsula, Quintana Roo, incorporating the Riviera Maya, is the state that homes many vacation destinations, such as Playa del Carmen and Cancun.

For family vacations in Mexico, and the best of any coast, Cancun is the ultimate escape.

Famous for its white-sand beaches, there’s no color quite like the sea color in Cancun! Beloved also for its clubs, outdoor activities, and low-key vibe, you need to look no further for fun.

Nearby Isla Mujeres (Island of Women) boasts seafood restaurants, moped tours, water sports, kayaking, and an aquatic park.

The Punta Sur, the southern tip is a hot spot thanks to its lighthouse, the remains of a Mayan temple, and a sanctuary for sea turtles.

At Ventura Park (a water park with other attractions), the whole family can ride a roller coaster, walk on suspension bridges, and relax in the rivers.

After days full of adrenaline, for more historic fun, a trip to Chichen Itza is educational. As a pre-Columbian city and an archaeological site, it’s now officially one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Enjoy Carefree Los Cabos

Los Cabos is a municipality located at the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula, in the state of Baja California Sur. It encompasses the two towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo.

There’s plenty of golfing and sports fishing, shopping and entertainment, and even cobblestone streets lined with jacaranda trees and colonial architecture for families to stroll around and take pictures.

The activities are endless: jet-skiing, banana-boating, parasailing, snorkeling, kitesurfing, diving, and horseback riding. ATV tours will make your heart race, whilst daring to ride a camel across the dunes will leave you in awe.

Take a boat tour to the Arch, where you may pass sea lions lazing on the rocks, or take a day trip to Todos Santos, a rural town, recognized as a “Pueblo Magico’’ (a Magical Town).

Other points of interest are the Tío Pepe Granja Didáctica, an interactive farm for meeting animals, La Pista, the ice-skating rink, Universum, a science and technology museum, and Museo Interactivo de Economía, where your kids can learn more about the economy and finances, in an immersive and fun way.

Away from the hustle and bustle of downtown, visit the residential area of Coyoacan about nine kilometers out, where the Frida Kahlo museum is situated.

Free Time in Puerto Escondido

The small city of Puerto Escondido is situated about 200 miles south of Acapulco and is aptly named “Hidden Port”.

For younger surfers looking to hit the giant waves that the Pacific Coast enjoys in abundance, there are two international surfing competitions held at the Zicotela beach, every August and November.

Be sure to visit San Agustinillo, an hour’s drive away, where there is a local surf school, as well as a vast offer of activities such as boat rides to admire the local biodiversity and rafting excursions along the rivers of the region.

Horse rides to the local town of Manialtepec with its thermal waters are fun, and a night tour of the Manialtepec Lagoon with bioluminescent creatures lighting your every move is spectacular.

Mexico Calls You Back

With variety, romance and relaxation all expertly woven together, families with kids can discover the freedom to personalize their adventures. When your plans call for family fun, the heartstrings of Mexico will always insist on your return.

Whether it’s a teens club, ultimate playtime packages, or a fiesta for all the family, Mexican hospitality will engage and delight. Details make all the difference – and when your family wakes up in Mexico, every day they’ll feel like royalty.

Popularly called a “Jewel of the Caribbean”, Cancun is home to scenic beauty composed of beautiful white sandy beaches, incredible biodiversity, a grand number of hotels, and many attractions and stores.

All this makes Cancun an ideal beach vacation destination. However, for this and much more, it is essential that before traveling, you have a detailed plan of the places you want to visit, as well as how to get to them.

Cancun transportation options: Whether you opt for airport transfers, local buses, rental cars, or explore the city on foot, choosing the right transportation ensures that you make the most of your time in Cancun.

How to get from Cancun airport to your hotel

Most hotels in Cancun are located in the Hotel Zone, which is approximately 20 minutes from the airport if you decide to hire a car rental or Cancun Airport transportation service, which has direct routes to this area.

If you decide to take a local bus from the airport, the travel time will be at least 60 minutes. Keep in mind that there are no direct buses to the Cancun hotel zone, so you will have to change to a taxi to get to the hotel.

How to get to Tulum from Cancun Hotel Zone

There are a few options available to travel from Cancun Hotel Zone to Tulum.

Private Transportation

Duration approximately 1:53 hours. Hiring a private transportation service, such as a taxi, shuttle, or private car, is one of the fastest and most convenient ways to reach Tulum from the Cancun Hotel Zone.

Enjoy a comfortable and direct journey without the need for multiple stops.

Travel in a local bus

Duration is almost 3 hours. Taking a bus is a more budget-friendly option.

Local buses depart from the Cancun bus station, and the journey may take around 3 hours. While it takes longer compared to private transportation, bus travel provides a cost-effective way to reach Tulum.

Check the bus schedule and plan to ensure a smooth journey to Tulum.

How to get to Playa del Carmen from Cancun Hotel Zone

For a convenient and efficient journey from Cancun Hotel Zone, a private transfer to Playa del Carmen, is a wise choice. Many private companies offer airport transfers between Cancun and Playa del Carmen.

The private transfer services often use comfortable vehicles with professional drivers. The journey typically takes around 1:10 hours, offering a quick and direct route from Cancun airport to Playa del Carmen.

Enjoy a hassle-free and comfortable journey by choosing a private transfer.

Advantages of private transportation to visit Cancun

Private transportation services have many advantages.

The total cost is divided by the number of people on board. Private transfers have strict safety standards, and some private transfer companies even include insurance in the final rates, which can be beneficial.

Private transport will save you a lot of waiting time compared to other transport options. With a private transportation service, you can arrive quickly and directly to any destination you wish within the Riviera Maya.

The quality of private transportation is almost always supported by certificates guaranteeing professional service. In most cases, drivers are constantly trained and bilingual to adequately communicate with travelers.

When you rent a private transfer in Cancun and the Riviera Maya region, you can customize it the way you want, choosing the vehicle that best suits your needs as a traveler and adding additional services if necessary.

How safe is Cancun during hurricane season? https://mexicanroutes.com/how-safe-is-cancun-during-hurricane-season/ Thu, 16 Jun 2022 02:46:00 +0000 https://mexicanroutes.com/?p=12064 Given the fact that tropical storms like hurricanes have the potential to create major damage when they are forceful, they should always be taken seriously. Hurricane season, however, should not get in the way of much-needed vacation in Mexico, particularly if you are considering a visit to Cancun.

Home to some of the most breathtaking beaches along the Mexican Caribbean, Cancun was fortunate to avoid much damage from hurricanes. In fact, the coastal city has only been hit by two major hurricanes (Gilbert and Wilma, respectively), which were 17 years apart.

This means the likelihood that a hurricane might hit during your vacation is very slim.

When is hurricane season in Cancun?

Hurricane season begins in June and runs through November, though storms are more prevalent between August and October. Of course, a hurricane watch should always be noted, and if you are in the area, follow all warnings and evacuation procedures as officials issue them.

One of the smartest precautions you can personally take is to purchase trip insurance in case your vacation plans have to change due to storm activity. With hurricane season comes rain, but it often appears as just a passing shower, allowing you to get on with the fun of your vacation.

Cancun hurricane season preparations

Quintana Roo, along with other states of the Mexican Republic, unfolds many security measures to maintain people’s safety.

Measures include:

 • All flights get canceled.
 • CFE workers, cranes, and vehicles get positioned throughout the state to attend to any affectation that may occur.
 • Constant monitoring of the evolution of the upcoming hurricane.
 • Identification of essential workers and users of buildings such as hospitals, gas stations, fire stations, and more.
 • Evacuation of civilians if needed.
 • Anticyclonic shelters get opened.

Perks of vacationing during hurricane season

As one of the most popular tourist destinations in Mexico, Cancun can feel a bit crowded at peak travel times.

However, hurricane season is a great time to plan your trip if you are searching for a quieter vacation because occupancy rates are typically lower. You will be able to truly relax with fewer people around.

This also means that there are travel bargains to discover, from room upgrades to discounted rates.

Staying safe in Cancun

With today’s modern advances in technology, meteorologists are able to more accurately predict and track storms. This allows them to warn both tourists and locals far in advance of any storm activity that has the potential to hit land.

Cancun has been very fortunate to receive very few major hurricanes, but it is still crucial to heed any warnings put out by officials in order to keep everyone out of danger. There are times when mandatory evacuations are put into place so that visitors and residents remain as safe as possible.

Even when tropical storms and hurricanes don’t strike land, they can bring heavy rainfall and high winds that can cause flooding. Fortunately, taking the necessary precautions during these situations keeps things from becoming dangerous.

]]>
Cancun hurricane season https://mexicanroutes.com/cancun-hurricane-season/ Thu, 16 Jun 2022 02:31:03 +0000 https://mexicanroutes.com/?p=12061 The Cancun hurricane season is the same as the Atlantic season. It lasts from the beginning of June to the end of October. The highest chance of a hurricane occurring is in September and October with a slightly lower chance in August.

What happens in Cancun when a hurricane is predicted?

This really depends on both the strength of the hurricane and its predicted path.

A minor hurricane that brushes by may mean little to no difference in daily operations. However, aquatic-based tours will usually be canceled as a precaution. There may also be disruption to ferry services to Isla Mujeres.

A minor hurricane direct strike and a major hurricane non-direct strike will mean that precautions are significantly increased. Local businesses and residents will begin boarding up their homes. There may also be panic buying of goods at supermarkets.

Hotels will also board up their facilities and may issue instructions to guests in the event of an evacuation. Alcohol service may be stopped. Usually, evacuation happens only in the most serious of cases.

This has happened only once in the last 15 years, for Hurricane Wilma in October 2015.

Hotel evacuations during the Cancun hurricane season

Although rare this is not to be ruled out. If evacuated from your hotel you’ll most likely be taken to a local school in downtown Cancun. You’ll be looked after by hotel staff until any danger is over.

Although sleeping facilities will be provided they will likely be basic. Grab some bedding and pillows from your hotel! In the case of Hurricane Wilma in 2005 people stayed in emergency accommodation at a local school for 4 days.

A direct strike from a major hurricane will cause extensive damage. There will be floods and power outages for an extended period. Airport and public transport services will likely not be operational for some time.

The best thing to do is to hold tight and comply with instructions from officials. It will be uncomfortable, but you will not be in personal danger. Your chances of being affected really are slim, but not impossible.

You should be wary of traveling during the months of Cancun hurricane season, but don’t be unduly scared. Severe hurricanes really are a rare event, with only two major ones happening in the last 40 years.

Recent Hurricanes in Cancun

There have been two major hurricane events in Cancun’s tourism history of 40 years or so:

 • Hurricane Gilbert on Sept 15th, 1988
 • Hurricane Wilma on 21 October 2005

Hurricanes don’t hit Cancun every year, far from it. There are also occasions where near misses have taken place and resulted in a lot of worries. However, they usually bring no major damage or disruption.

Hurricane Dean in Cancun

In August 2007 Cancun had a lucky near miss. Hurricane Dean looked dead set to strike Cancun with a ferocity similar to that of Wilma. Luckily, 48 hours beforehand, Dean changed course and ended up making landfall some 200 miles south.

Although major preparations had been made in Cancun, the worse that happened was 48 km/h winds gusting to 80 km/h on the coast. Also, some heavy rain showers lasted just a few hours.

The following day things were back to normal and there was a little trace that Hurricane Dean had grazed.

Hurricane Gustav in Cancun

In August 2008 hurricane Gustav came close but in the end, this one also turned out to be a lot of fuss about nothing.

Hurricanes really are not common, every year it seems the National Hurricane Center predicts a busy hurricane season. More often than not that hasn’t materialized in Cancun.

It’s important to note that Tropical Storms don’t always develop into hurricanes. In fact, they usually don’t. Even if a storm does develop into a hurricane there is only a small chance that Cancun will be directly affected.

Hurricane Wilma in Cancun

On 21 and 22 October 2005, Hurricane Wilma made a direct strike on Cancun causing severe damage. Hurricane Wilma is the most powerful hurricane ever recorded. She completely destroyed the Cancun tourist industry for a good 6 months.

Many hotels were damaged some beyond repair. Shops, bars, and restaurants suffered flooding and structural damage. Downtown infrastructure was badly damaged, with many power lines down.

Most residents were without electricity and/or water, many for over a week.

There were no smartphones or Facebook back in 2005, it was very difficult to find out the news.

Post-hurricane Wilma clean-up efforts

The immediate clean-up effort was truly something to behold. Instead of waiting for the authorities to pick up the pieces every man, woman, and child were out helping.

They were clearing fallen debris, unblocking drains, and repairing what they could. Additionally, they provided support and comfort, not only to each other but to the thousands of tourists ‘trapped’ in Cancun due to the closure of Cancun Airport.

This was a huge storm by anyone’s measure and the efforts of the people of Cancun were truly remarkable.

The resilience and determination of the Mexican people together with unprecedented support from the Mexican Government ensured that Cancun came back better than ever.

Cancun Beach Recovery

A massive beach recovery program took place restoring the beaches to a condition better than before Wilma hit.

Unfortunately, this wasn’t too successful and most of the sand washed away again within a year. The exercise was then repeated in 2010 and this time the sand stayed!

Hoteliers and restaurateurs turned the downtime opportunity to their advantage and brought forward longer-term plans to upgrade and improve facilities resulting in today’s Cancun being way improved on the Cancun of 2005.

Hurricane Agatha puts Cancun on weather alert https://mexicanroutes.com/hurricane-agatha-puts-cancun-on-weather-alert/ Mon, 30 May 2022 23:06:16 +0000 https://mexicanroutes.com/?p=12069 The first hurricane of the 2022 season isn’t likely to cause damage. Cancun and the rest of Quintana Roo have been placed on a weather alert in anticipation of Hurricane Agatha. Agatha is the first hurricane to hit Mexico this season.

Weather stations have been keeping track of a pressure system moving east across the Pacific Ocean for the past week.

Their observations saw the system turn into a tropical storm, and now a Category 1 hurricane. Hurricane Agatha is the first named storm of the season and is expected to be the first of many.

A category-one can be expected to have wind speeds ranging from 74 to 95 miles per hour, and although most homes and other structures will be okay, damage can occur.

The main risk of a category one hurricane comes in falling debris from poorly built structures or tree branches that may break. Storm surges are also a significant risk for towns and cities close to the coast.

We now have Hurricane #Agatha in the Pacific. It will make landfall in Mexico and attempt to cross into the Bay of Campeche. Most likely it fall apart over Mexico’s mountainous terrain and the remnant tropical DNA will attempt to reform in the Gulf by mid to late week.

Currently, the states of Oaxaca and Chiapas are the most affected areas and have been put on a much higher alert, but the movement of the hurricane will most likely impact Quintana Roo in some way.

As it is crossing land, if it does hit Quintana Roo it will be weakened significantly and lose its hurricane designation.

This does not mean the risk is completely gone, and those in the state should anticipate a higher than normal volume of rain, strong and sustained gusts of wind, and some high water levels.

The hurricane is expected to make landfall on Monday morning before moving northwards towards Yucatan and Quintana Roo.

The increased activity of La Niña, the cold side of a complex weather system that helps predict storm season veracity, has suggested that the coming months could be tough for the region. As many as nine hurricanes are expected to form around the Mexicans Caribbean.

Of course, many of these may be small and cause very few problems, but there is always the potential for one to be devastating for the state.

Tourists caught in Cancun or other towns in Quintana Roo when one hit can find themselves stranded for extended periods of time. Flights can become sporadic, large-scale damage can hamper evacuations, and power outages can cripple communication in the region.

For this reason, tourists hoping to travel to Quintana Roo should monitor the weather over the coming months.

If there is a risk of a tropical storm or hurricane hitting Quintana Roo, travel to the region should be avoided. Many weather outlets monitor the progress of storm systems long before they achieve hurricane storm status.

A named storm approaching the coast should be avoided at all costs.

Hurricanes are not the only natural weather phenomenon Quintana Roo has to deal with.

For the past few months, the state has been battling the continued arrival of sargassum seaweed. Spurred on by global sea temperatures rising, the unsightly seaweed has been causing huge problems for hotels, restaurants, and the tourism industry as a whole.

Aside from the masses of seaweed blanketing the typically pristine sand, sargassum produces a terrible sulfur-like smell that drives tourists away from the beaches. Many tourists actively avoid sargassum season and many are known to cancel their vacations when deposits are high.

The state has spent hundreds of thousands on prevention, but even the assistance of twenty-six navy ships has done little to hamper the deposits.

Hectic efforts to clean up in the early hours of the morning are the only option for many businesses, and the added manpower is eating into their profits.

With the threat of hurricanes, however, the sargassum problem may seem far smaller. Hopefully, none of the storms that hit Quintana Roo this year will wreak the type of devastation that could cripple the region for weeks.

However, today Cancun is perhaps one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. It could be said that Cancun is two cities in one.

On the one hand the Hotel Zone, and on the other the Downtown area, where local residents live. If you go through both sides you will see some notable differences, between modernity and the large shopping centers of the Hotel Zone, the old buildings, and the popular markets.

The best time to travel to Cancun is between the months of June and October when temperatures are between 32°C and 35°C. However, between June and mid-August tropical rains usually come, which fall in abundance, but are of short duration.

What to do in Cancun?

There are many tourists who come to Cancun, lie on the beach, and thus spend their vacations. Big mistake. There are a lot of opportunities in Cancun and its surroundings. From scuba diving, water skiing, hiking, windsurfing, and much more.

Diving is something that you have to do almost compulsorily since Cancun has one of the most interesting coral reefs in the world.

Don’t miss the unique experience of swimming with dolphins in Cancun.

Swimming with dolphins in Cancun and Isla Mujeres is an unforgettable adventure you should try. You can also visit the Punta Nizuc water park go fishing on the high seas, or boat trips to watch birds.

In Cancun, you can enjoy beaches for all tastes.

Beaches to go with the family and simply lie in the sun, such as Las Perlas or Playa Linda, as well as beaches with very good restaurants such as Playa Langosta and Playa Tortuga, an ideal place to take a boat to Isla Mujeres.

Playa Caracol is a beach with traditional bars and many shops, just like Playa Chac Mool, with its beach bars. These two previous beaches, along with those of Gaviota Azul, Marlin, Ballenas, and Playa Delfines, have a slightly stronger swell, ideal for surfing.

You can also make excursions to Mayan ruins, a crocodile farm, a botanical park, bicycle routes, and even two golf courses.

One-day excursions from Cancun

One of the essential excursions that you have to do in Cancun is to the Mayan ruins of Chichen Itza, with its pyramids and temples, a place inhabited for more than two thousand years. The Pyramid of Kukulkan dominates the entire site area with its wide stairs on both sides.

You also can visit the archaeological site of Coba, another archaeological site of the pre-Columbian Mayan culture, located about forty km northwest of Tulum. The Nohoch Mul pyramid, 42 meters high is the tallest pyramid in the north of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Gastronomy in Cancun

A tourist city like Cancun has everything to eat, from local products to international cuisine, as well as fast food such as hamburgers, hot dogs, etc… Try the local cuisine, which is the best in all of Mexico since it mixes Mayan and Spanish influences.

A dish that is not missing from any Cancun menu is the “Cochinito Pibil”, a baked suckling pig, which is served between banana leaves and with achiote sauce. Try the famous “panucho” – some fried tortillas with black beans, chicken, and pickled onions, are also not lacking.

Nightlife in Cancun

Cancun never sleeps, and that’s why it has a large number of nightclubs, nightclubs, and bars of all kinds.

The animation is concentrated in the Hotel Zone, and everything begins to emerge at 22:00. The music in some places does not stop until dawn. Foam parties, bikini contests, and even parades through the streets with traditional dances.

Transportation in Cancun

In Cancun, there are buses that connect both the Downtown area and the Hotel Zone. In addition, you can also travel by bus to Valladolid and Mérida or travel the entire Caribbean coast through Highway 180.

There are also bus routes between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

And if you want, nothing better than a ferry to get to Isla Mujeres or Isla Cozumel.

Dolphin Discovery on Isla Mujeres

Dolphin Discovery is located in the southern part of Isla Mujeres. This fantastic place is surrounded by bright green palm trees, dark blue, turquoise crystal clear waters, and white sands.

Dolphin Discovery offers an unforgettable experience of swimming with dolphins. Feel the thrill of being pushed around by dolphins. Swim also with sea lions, manatees, sharks, and rays in their natural habitat!

Did you know?

Dolphins have a great need for communication and great abilities in interspecies communication. The dolphin skillfully uses non-verbal ways of communication in his play behavior. All this creates a strong and positive atmosphere around this method of therapy.

Communication with dolphins reduces the frequency of asthma attacks by 38%, and in 61% of cases improves concentration. Diabetics have significantly lower blood sugar levels. Dolphins are able to correct various kinds of neuroses.

This technique makes great strides in the treatment of oncological diseases and the rehabilitation of vision. Communication with a dolphin brings very good results in post-traumatic syndromes and severe stress.

Where to stay in Cancun: Best areas and neighborhoods https://mexicanroutes.com/where-to-stay-in-cancun-best-areas-and-neighborhoods/ Thu, 17 Feb 2022 17:36:37 +0000 https://mexicanroutes.com/?p=10915 The best areas to stay in Cancun are the Hotel Zone, Downtown, and Isla Mujeres.

Each one is very different from the others, and in addition to these three areas, we recommend a few more. We explain how they are so that you can decide based on what you are looking for for your vacation.

Cancun is an indisputable member of the top of the most recognized Mexican tourist destinations in the world.

Those who visit it for the first time cannot help but be surprised by the beauty of its beaches of fine white sand, and by the sublime shades of blue of the sea, which range from emerald to turquoise.

The state of Quintana Roo is a tropical paradise full of wonders. It is home to Xel-Há, an ecological park nestled right at the point where the subsoil currents meet the Caribbean Sea.

It is not surprising, therefore, that it is a setting rich in freshwater and saltwater species, a true natural aquarium.

Cancun has remarkably preserved vestiges of one of the most developed civilizations of pre-Columbian America. Such is the case of the sites known as the Temple of the Alacrán and El Rey.

Rio Secreto is also located here, a turquoise underground tributary that passes just below a gallery of stalagmites and stalactites.

For its part, Xcaret combines the best of both worlds: natural and cultural treasures. It houses a park with lush vegetation, cenotes, hidden rivers, and Mayan ruins.

Also, the destination has a peculiar underwater museum that can only be explored with the proper diving equipment and some of the best nightclubs in the country.

Depending on what you are looking for, you should sleep in Cancun in one area or another. Basically, we recommend 5 large areas with well-differentiated profiles: Downtown Cancun, the Hotel Zone, Puerto Juárez, Playa Mujeres, and Islas Mujeres.

Hotel zone, the best area to stay in Cancun

It is to be expected that one of the must-see destinations in the Caribbean has a great infrastructure in terms of services and accommodation to make visitors feel welcome.

This is especially true on Boulevard Kukulkan, the quintessential tourist area. Here you will find options suitable for the whole family.

You cannot leave Cancun without having come to Ventura Park, a water park overlooking the Caribbean Sea. Without a doubt, its main attraction is the Dolphinaris, an area to swim with dolphins.

On the other hand, history lovers will be able to learn more about the culture that prevailed in southeastern Mexico and part of Central America, before the arrival of the Spanish, when they visit the Mayan Museum in Cancun.

La Isla Cancún Shopping Village is a modern plaza located on the shores of the Nichupté lagoon. It is the ideal place to go shopping and spend unforgettable moments.

In its dozens of stores, you will find all kinds of articles from the main local, national and international brands.

Fun is guaranteed at the Cancun Wax Museum, with highly realistic wax representations of more than a hundred celebrities.

It doesn’t matter if you prefer to practice water sports or a quiet ride on the water aboard a yacht. Lighthouse Marina offers you both modalities.

You cannot miss a visit to Isla Shopping.

This mall is, at the same time, the headquarters of the Interactive Aquarium Cancun, where you can swim with dolphins, sharks, and manta rays, enjoy a live animal show, and see more than one hundred and forty aquatic species on display.

As night falls, the party continues at the Forum By the Sea, a beach-access complex that houses the best clubs in the city, such as Cabana Beach, Coco Bongo, Daddy’O, Mandala, and The City.

Get the best view of the city, and perhaps of the Mexican Caribbean, from the Torre Escénica Cancún, a building almost thirty meters high with a panoramic elevator. Enjoy scuba diving, jungle tours, jet ski rides, fishing, and sky riding at Aquaworld Cancun.

Many of the best accommodations in Cancun are in the hotel zone. Our selection for you includes hotels with affordable prices and All-Inclusive packages, along with some of the most luxurious options to stay in Cancun.

Downtown Cancun, cheap accommodation in Cancun

Only five kilometers after the hotel zone is the center of the city, known by Anglo-Saxon tourists as Downtown Cancun.

We recommend you visit El Meco, an interesting archaeological site that many tourists overlook when they come to the city due to the lack of publicity it receives, compared to Tulum and Chichen Itza.

Its main building is El Castillo, a pyramid with five levels. At the foot of its central staircase, there are two representations of Kukulcán, one of the many deities worshiped by the Mayans.

It’s more than twelve meters high making it the tallest pre-Hispanic structure in the north of the state of Quintana Roo. Since the site is not that extensive and only one section is open to the public, it shouldn’t take you more than an hour to walk around.

At lunchtime, you can head to La Habichuela, a popular restaurant that is very popular with both locals and visitors. The dimly lit garden has the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a romantic alfresco dinner.

The specialty of the house is Yucatecan food, as well as various dishes typical of Caribbean cuisine and international haute cuisine. Do not leave without trying the famous Cocobichuela.

Downtown Cancun is the ideal place to enjoy rock classics. Many of the bars located along Yaxchilán Avenue offer live music of this genre almost every night.

Generally, the bands play from twelve at night until four in the morning. However, depending on the capacity, the presentation could last until dawn. You will find the best atmosphere in El Asador, El Chikito, Los Arcos, and Ruta 666.

For shopping, nothing better than Mercado 28, a complex with dozens of shops selling handicrafts, clothing, pottery, and souvenirs. You can get better prices if you dare to haggle, that is, to negotiate with the sellers.

The center also offers a large number of alternatives to staying in Cancun. If in the Hotel Zone the “all-inclusive” predominate, in the center of Cancun you have a variety of hotels that offer more traditional urban formulas and with a wide range of prices.

Puerto Juárez, good prices in a good location

North of Cancun, traveling along the road that leads to Punta Sam, you will arrive at Puerto Juárez, from where ferries leave for Isla Mujeres. The boats leave every half hour, between half-past six in the morning and half-past eight at night.

The service from the island to the port runs every half hour between 6:00 in the morning and 9:00 at night and every hour outside these hours.

Now, Puerto Juárez is more than a simple access road to another destination. Like the rest of Cancun, Puerto Juárez has dream beaches. In addition, its privileged location allows you to obtain an unbeatable view of the Caribbean Sea.

Being a less crowded destination than the Cancun hotel zone, the atmosphere is calmer. Therefore, it is an excellent alternative for those who want to enjoy the sun, the sea, and the sand in a relaxed environment.

Along the highway that passes through Puerto Juárez, there are several establishments with palapa roofs where you can eat delicious seafood dishes. One of the best is the Flamingos Restaurant & Bar. Dare to order the exquisite grilled octopus.

Puerto Juárez is a good place to sleep in Cancun, away from the hustle and bustle of the busiest area of the city and very close to Isla Mujeres. It’s good that there are good accommodation options!

Playa Mujeres (Costa Mujeres) is, luxury resort in a quiet area

Another alternative to staying in Cancun to the tumult that characterizes the downtown area and Boulevard Kukulkan is Playa Mujeres, a location that retains its original wild appearance.

Isla Mujeres, which faces the coast, looks even more beautiful at night, offering a first-row show for those who contemplate its coastline from the homonymous beach.

Best of all, you don’t have to leave Cancun to enjoy the charms of Playa Mujeres. A trip of about twenty minutes from the center, heading north, is enough to get there.

Visiting this site is equivalent to going back to a time before the tourist boom that the city and practically the entire coast of Quintana Roo have suffered.

The few hotels that currently exist in this place had to comply with a series of measures in order to inflict as little damage as possible on the environment. Since they were not built directly on the beach, the sand dunes were spared.

Each hotel has viewpoints that make it possible to contemplate nature without problems. The regulation even requires that earthy tones be used when painting the exteriors of buildings, thus ensuring that they are fully integrated into the environment.

And since these tourism projects are recent, visitors who choose to sleep in Cancun on this beach will spend their stay in modern facilities, with all the comforts they could wish for.

Isla Mujeres, a fascinating island nearby Cancun

In our count of places that you have to know, we could not miss a fascinating island that is located less than 13 km north of the Cancun coast. We are talking about Isla Mujeres, a place whose attributes have made it very popular in recent years.

When you visit this site you will feel like paradise.

The ideal means of transportation for tourists to this little slice of paradise is golf carts. You can rent them for a full day or for half a day.

Take a tour of La Granja de Tortugas to admire the newly hatched turtles and other marine life.

At certain times of the year, anyone who wishes is invited to take part in the sea turtle release, an event in which humans help hatchlings make their way from the beach to the sea.

At the southern end of the island is the Temple of Ixchel, a vestige of the Mayan civilization.

In the center and north of Isla Mujeres, you will come across a wide range of restaurants. In many cases, their seafood was caught the same day by local fishermen: literally from sea to table.

Minino’s, just steps from the Ultramar ferry docks, is a good option for fresh produce at affordable prices.

The island’s nightlife is almost nil. It is true that there are a few bars open, but nothing compared to the clubs in mainland Cancun. Of course, there is always the option of taking the ferry to the city, where you will find endless options.

The hotel offer in Isla Mujeres is wide for the small size of the island. Options for lodging in Cancun include bed & breakfasts, boutique hotels, condominiums, and luxury resorts.

Dubai Palace Casino in Cancun

Although it is not a hotel, nor a resort, it is worth naming it in this post. Dubai Palace is the most impressive casino in Cancun, which is renowned not only for its wide variety of games and machines but also for its unique experience and ambiance.

The restaurant offers Mexican food, as well as mariachis and the Mexican-style service is also one of the characteristics that differentiate this casino from others in the world.

Cancun Underwater Museum https://mexicanroutes.com/cancun-underwater-museum/ Sat, 13 Feb 2021 04:46:45 +0000 https://mexicanroutes.com/?p=9558 The Cancún Underwater Museum (Museo Subacuático de Arte, known as MUSA) is a non-profit organization based in Cancún, Mexico devoted to the art of conservation.

The museum has a total of 500 sculptures, most by the British sculptor Jason de Caires Taylor and the others by five Mexican sculptors, with three different galleries submerged between three and six meters deep in the ocean at the Cancún National Marine Park.

The museum was thought up by Marine Park Director Jaime Gonzalez Canto, with Taylor’s assistance, with the objective of saving the nearby coral reefs by providing an alternative destination for divers.

It was started in 2009 and officially opened in November 2010.

History

At the beginning of 2008, Jaime Gonzalez Canto and Jason de Caires Taylor began to create plans for an underwater museum that would be formed by nature into a coral reef.

Dr. Jaime González Miki, the Director of the National Park Costa Occidental Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc, saw that the natural coral reefs were being damaged by tourists, anchors, and divers.

In particular, the largest coral reef in Cancún, Manchones Reef, was receiving the most damage because it is the most often visited by divers and snorkelers.

Early in 2005, González Canto suggested to the then President of the Cancún Nautical Association, Roberto Díaz Abraham, the idea of taking snorkelers and divers to an area where concrete reefs with some corals had been placed, to draw them away from Manchones reef.

By January 2008, Díaz Abraham walked away from the project, believing that it would take many more years for the artificial coral gardens to flourish and become an attraction, but González Canto persisted.

Pursuing research on artificial reefs, he came across Taylor, who had been pioneering the use of underwater sculptures for the creation of artificial reefs on a project in Grenada that demonstrated the value of art in conservation, the Molinere Underwater Sculpture Park.

He was a diving instructor in the Caribbean at the time, which also allowed him to see art in a different way.

Roberto Diaz Abraham agreed to the plan for Taylor to create an underwater sculpture museum. MUSA was created and Taylor was contracted to do the initial work installing almost 500 sculptures, with the others by Mexican sculptors.

The first four sculptures were placed underwater in November 2009, and most of Taylor’s The Silent Evolution had been installed by the end of 2010. The museum officially opened on November 27, 2010, shortly before the start of the Cancún climate summit.

By the end of 2013, five years after the foundation of MUSA, a total of 500 concrete sculptures had been placed on the ocean floor, 487 by Taylor and the rest by five Mexican artists. 477 are exhibited in the Manchones Gallery and 23 in the Nizuc Gallery.

In addition, 26 replicas and one original are located at a visitor center at Plaza Kukulcán, a mall in the hotel zone of Cancún.

More than 100,000 visitors, out of 500,000 that visited the Government Protected Area, visited MUSA during 2013.

Museum

MUSA obtained a permit to sink 1,200 structures in 10 different areas within the National Marine Park. So far only two have been developed, Manchones Reef with 477 sculptures, and Punta Nizuc with 23 structures.

A new installation by Cuban sculptor Elier Amado Gil, Blessings, is to be placed in a new gallery called Chitales. Snorkelers, scuba divers, and tourists can visit the underwater exhibits via a glass-bottom boat.

To place the statues on the ocean floor, Taylor had a special lift made for the statues so none would be damaged during the move. A forty-ton crane was placed on a commercial ferry in order to lower the sculptures.

Some are so heavy that they have to be lifted into the water using lift bags.

The sculptures are created with pH-neutral marine concrete, made with the help of marine park officials and the Cancún Nautical Association, and are created above ground and cleaned before being taken underwater so they do not have any chemicals on them that may harm the water, animals, or reef.

Jason deCaires Taylor’s The Silent Evolution consists of more than 400 human figures depicted interacting with the environment around them, with both a positive and negative impact.

He shows how humans can live with nature and make a workable future between the two, but also how humans have damaged nature, specifically the coral reefs, and show no sympathy.

The statues in The Silent Evolution show how some humans see their surroundings and embrace them while others hide their faces. Each statue was made to resemble members of a local fishing community where Taylor lives.

Each statue has its own personality and features. Taylor made sure every detail from the hair to the clothes of the statues was perfect.

They include a little girl with a faint smile on her face looking up to the surface; six businessmen with their heads in the sand, not paying attention to their surroundings; and even a man behind a desk with his dog lying on him, but looking tired and uninvolved in the environment.

The work took Taylor 18 months and 120 hours of working underwater and used 120 tons of concrete, sand, and gravel, 3,800m of fiberglass, and 400 kg of silicone.

Taylor planted pieces of coral from damaged reefs on some of the first sculptures. The Silent Evolution is a two-part art installation: the underwater sculptures themselves are the first part, while the second is how nature will transform them as coral grows and a new reef forms.

In March 2011 a new installation by Taylor – “What Have We Done?” – opened at Punta Nizuc. One exhibit room is onshore in a mall, Plaza Kukulcán, with 26 replicas and one original ceramic sculpture by Roberto Díaz Abraham, The Ocean Muse.

Benefits

The underwater museum is to benefit the protection of the coral reefs.

Artificial reefs are usually created by sunken ships and other objects that have fallen to the bottom of the ocean floor. The statues are a new technique and material for coral to grow on, a means for art to save the oceans.

As the statues were made with pH-neutral cement, coral, seaweed, and algae are able to grow and develop better than on an old ship. Stable structures with a stable base are known to be ideal surfaces for artificial reefs.

The statues also have holes in them, which allow marine wildlife to colonize and feed off the coral. Coral reefs will increase, but so will marine life. After only a short time under the water, the statues began to be transformed by nature.

In time, all the statues will be covered and their figures will barely be visible.

The museum also benefits the community by attracting tourists. One local guide expressed concern to a reporter that the statues will themselves be damaged, but the museum is planned to grow and repair itself.

One day trips from Cancun

Underwater Museum of Art: In 2009, 500 life-size sculptures made by artists from different countries were submerged in Punta Nizuc, the result is a landscape that combines the beauty of art and nature. There are 3 ways to visit it: A glass bottom boat, snorkeling and of course, diving.

El Rey, an archaeological site: El Rey is a small Mayan archaeological site that goes unnoticed by most visitors. But if you are interested in the Mayan culture or you like pre-Hispanic history as much as I do, you really enjoy strolling among its buildings in great tranquility. In addition, El Rey is located within the hotel zone, so it will not be difficult for you to get there.

Isla Mujeres: Isla Mujeres is located just 6 km from Cancun by Ferry. Isla Mujeres is a destination unto itself and has a wealth of entertainment options. A must-see is Playa Norte, one of the most beautiful beaches in the Mexican Caribbean.

Holbox: Getting to Isla Holbox is not so easy (see How to get to Holbox), but it is worth it. Holbox still retains that charm of looking like a small fishing village and its tranquility, purity, and beauty are already becoming scarce in the Mexican Caribbean. In addition, Holbox is the home of the whale shark.

Playa del Carmen and Tulum: Playa del Carmen is the main destination of the Riviera Maya. If you want to get away for an afternoon or a night, «Playa» is a good option, its fifth avenue is great for relaxing and shopping, and the gastronomic offer is first class. For its part, Tulúm has some of the most beautiful beaches in the entire Riviera Maya and the extraordinary Ruins of Tulum facing the Caribbean Sea.

Xcaret: Xcaret is the most famous theme park in Mexico, a true paradise with a sample of Mexican culture and water activities of all kinds. The park is not cheap, but it is well worth it; It is an experience that I personally recommend to family and friends. Check out our guide 10 things you can’t miss in Xcaret so that you get the most out of your visit.

Chichén Itzá: Named one of the New 7 Wonders of the World and a World Heritage Site, Chichen Itza is a must-see. Chichen Itza has located 188 km from Cancun and there are several ways to visit it: By public transport, private, or on an organized tour such as Xichen de Xperiencias Xcaret. Among the many attractions of Chichén Itzá are the imposing Castle of Kukulkán, the Sacred Cenote, the Mayan observatory, and the ball court.

Nichupte Lagoon: Between the hotel zone and the city of Cancun is the Nichupte Lagoon. This little oasis in the middle of tourist developments is full of life: Mangroves, crocodiles, white turtles, leopard frogs, iguanas and an endless number of native flora and fauna are some of its attractions. The most common way to visit it is through organized tours. If you like adventure, here you can try flyboarding.

How to get there

As a Top World Destination, Cancun is very accessible from every corner of the globe. All major airlines have direct or nonstop service to Cancun. Cancun International Airport is the only airport available in the area and every year more than 8 million passengers pass through its doors.

Cancun’s history as a modern tourist destination began relatively recently, and Cancun rapidly became well-known around the world for its spectacular turquoise blue waters and magnificent natural wonders.

It was a relatively small village, primarily focused on fishing and trading.

Cancun as we know it today was founded as a tourism project in the early 1970s. The government identified the potential of the area’s beautiful beaches and proximity to ancient Mayan ruins to attract tourists.

Cancun officially opened as a tourist destination on August 20, 1970, when the first nine hotels welcomed their guests. The area rapidly grew in popularity and became a popular hub for international tourism.

Today, Cancun is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Mexico.

Cancun is divided into two zones:

Cancun Downtown: In Cancun’s downtown area, you will find all the amenities and services of a developed community such as banks, restaurants, schools, churches, foreign consulates, markets, hospitals, etc.

Hotel Zone: The hotel zone is the “tourist zone” where you will find all the fun activities and entertainment such as world-class shopping, amazing hotels and resorts, fantastic restaurants, and, of course, beaches.

Things to see and what to do in Cancun

But Cancun is much more than just a place with beautiful beaches. For tourist enjoyment, there are many exciting fun activities and entertainment available, as well as sightseeing and tourist attractions.

If you’re seeking adventure, you can embark on thrilling water sports such as snorkeling and diving in the crystal-clear waters of the Great Maya Reef or take a scenic boat tour to the captivating Isla Mujeres.

Cancun airport’s old control tower memorial https://mexicanroutes.com/cancun-airports-old-control-tower-memorial/ Sun, 07 Feb 2021 18:32:23 +0000 https://mexicanroutes.com/?p=9473 Cancun International Airport has 2 runways and a tall control tower, reaching 18th place among the tallest control towers in the world.

Cancun began its air operations on a rudimentary runway, operating with a control tower made of sticks and palms that operated until 1973. The original control tower was a temporary wooden construction for the operative needs of the recently created airport.

It was only 15 meters tall and had a 45-step staircase, with a base dimension of 5×5 meters.

Some documents’ records mention that at that time there were no other buildings constructed in the area, so the old control tower was possibly the first built structure in Cancún’s recent history.

Cresencio Ballesteros, the main shareholder and then president of Mexicana de Aviación, once said, skeptically looking at the initial precarious airport: “Forgive me for saying this, but I think that a Mexicana jet will never land here”.

In 1976, once the new airport was built, a commercial jet accidentally landed on Kabah Avenue, which previously served as the runway for the first airport, causing confusion and surprise.

Due to its accelerated growth, the Cancun of today is very different from the town that once was a few decades ago. In the Glorieta de la Colosio, there is proof of that small town that few knew – the old control tower.

The airport’s old control tower

This wooden structure on the Great Glorieta de la Colosio is a replica of the tower that controlled the arrival of flights. It is located on what was the 1st runway of the 1st airport that this Caribbean oasis once had.

The old Control Tower in Cancun is the work of the brothers Agustín and Enrique Landa Verdugo, made with wood. In 1976 this Tower was dismantled to create a new airport, Avenida Kabáh, and Boulevard Colosio that we know today.

For many years, this monument was forgotten.

Only in 2000, a replica was created, fed by the pioneers and by the Cancun authorities. This Tower was part of the 30th-anniversary celebration and since then it has been a symbol that even some people from Cancun do not know about its value.

The memorial was first built in 2002 with a donation by Aerocaribe Airlines, but the structure was damaged after Hurricane Wilma hit Cancun in 2005.

After pleas by the locals, the tower memorial was rebuilt and the new replica of the old control tower was raised in 2010.

The construction was later abandoned without proper maintenance until Woox Pinturas, a local wood maintenance company, made a donation to restore the structure to its original aspect.

The place where this memorial is located today was exactly where the control operations were carried out the old Cancun Airport, on the main road to the Cancun Airport, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum.

Previously, people could climb this historic structure and get a more interesting view of the city of Cancun and get an idea of what the city was like at that time, today, it remains a memory of the beginning of that promised land that today has become one of the main and most beautiful tourist destinations in the country.

On the morning of April 6, 2020, the old Cancun airport tower was rescued from the fire, thanks to an alert call.

Emergency forces were mobilized because they reported a fire registered.

The drivers passing by the place realized that the emblematic monument of the city was on fire. Fire department personnel arrived minutes later to put down the fire. At this moment the fire had already consumed part of the base to the top.

One day trip to Isla Mujeres https://mexicanroutes.com/one-day-trip-to-isla-mujeres/ Thu, 15 Oct 2020 00:43:16 +0000 https://mexicanroutes.com/?p=8818 The perfect Isla Mujeres day trip from Cancun

Isla Mujeres, relatively a small island situated just 13 km off the coastline, is a perfect place for a day trip from Cancun. This lovely place with beautiful beaches and cliffs is an ideal snorkeling spot.

In the pre-Hispanic time, long before the first arrival of conquerors, this island had been the place dedicated to the Mayan goddess Ixchel, who was the goddess of the moon and fertility.

The island was a place of pilgrimage for women during their symbolic transition from girl to woman, that’s why this island got the name Isla Mujeres (“The woman’s island”).

Isla Mujeres is not only a diving paradise, but it has also some historic and modern remarkable sites and Mayan ruins:

 • Ruins of Ixchel Temple
 • Hacienda Mundaca
 • Immaculate Conception Parish
 • Guadalupe Chapel
 • Captain Dulche’s Museum
 • The Shell House

What to see and to do on Isla Mujeres

These are the best beaches on Isla Mujeres where you can spend the day swimming and lie in the sun:

 • North Beach: Considered probably one of the best beaches on Riviera Maya. It is worth a visit, especially at sunset or at dusk.
 • Playa Lancheros: This is a rather enormous beachline with clubs, restaurants, and bars.
 • Playa Garrafón: The beach is quite small, but it’s a very cool snorkeling spot as there are hundreds of fish right next to the sand!
 • Playa Sol: It is the best location to watch the sunset, the water is not as shallow and clear as Playa Norte.

Punta Sur is an ecological park, located on the other side of the island, is a beautiful place to admire views of the cliffs, lighthouse, and large sculptures on a path overlooking the ocean.

Sculptural Park in Punta Sur is one of the most interesting places on the island is a park with 23 sculptures and the ruins of the Mayan temple of Ixchel.

This small ruin was once a lighthouse and temple to the goddess Ixchel, until, in 1988, Hurricane Gilbert caused vast damage, and ruined most of the foundation, leaving only a very small part of the temple.

Now there’s a modern art sculpture park in the area.

You can rent your own transportation and make a road trip on the east coastline, the most beautiful panoramic road on Isla Mujeres.

It also has a bike path where you can stroll quietly a few meters from the cliff.

Don’t forget to take a picture of the famous colored letters of ISLA MUJERES.

Immaculate Conception Parish is the main church on the island. The place is open also in the evening, while the mass is celebrating, and even if you are not a naive believer, it is always good to know a little about the local culture.

The nightlife atmosphere is concentrated on Calle Hidalgo, a pedestrianized street full of bars and restaurants and in the central square of the town, there are a few stalls with delicious street food.

The Isla Mujeres offers several areas where you can enjoy underwater diving:

 • Coral reef of Garrafón Park
 • Cave of the Sleeping Sharks
 • Underwater Museum of Art (MUSA)
 • Manchones Reef or the Cruz de la Bahía

Getting around on Isla Mujeres

Although the town center is small and you can walk around perfectly on foot, the best way is to rent your own transportation to explore other places on the island.

 • The most typical way is to rent a golf cart, here almost everyone moves by a cart, even locals.
 • Another option is to rent a motorcycle.
 • The third alternative is the taxi, they are fixed rates depending on the distance.

How to get to Isla Mujeres

By car, taxi, or local transfer

You can visit the island by local transfer transportation from Cancun airport. There are a lot of options for transportation from Cancun airport to Isla Mujeres.

You can book the transfer online, in advance, and in a lot of variations for all budgets.

By ferry from Cancun

There are also two ferry companies that arrive at Isla Mujeres from the ports of Cancun:

 • Marinsa only leaves from Puerto Juarez.
 • Ultramar is the most important and has departures from four ports along the Cancun coast and in the hotel zone: Playa Caracol, Playa Tortugas, El Embarcadero and Puerto Juarez.

The ferry trip takes about 20 minutes, the frequency is every 30 minutes.

Hurricane Delta smashes into Cancun https://mexicanroutes.com/hurricane-delta-smashes-into-cancun/ Wed, 07 Oct 2020 19:00:10 +0000 https://mexicanroutes.com/?p=12075 Hurricane Delta has ruined dream vacations for thousands of tourists who were forced to pack into crowded emergency shelters rife with the risk of spreading coronavirus as fierce winds and torrential rains battered Mexico’s top resort destination in Cancun.

On October 4, 2020, Hurricane Delta made landfall at about 5:30 as an extremely dangerous category 2 hurricane with winds of up to 110 mph downing nearly 100 trees and knocking out power along the northeastern coast of the Yucatan Peninsula.

The Hotel Association of Cancun said more than 40,000 tourists were evacuated from resorts in and around Cancun on Tuesday night as the hurricane’s winds topped 145mph before it weakened as it approached land.

About 50 miles south of Cancun the four-star Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya was transformed into an emergency shelter as hundreds of guests were packed into common-area rooms like sardines.

As of 07:00 Wednesday Hurricane Delta was centered about 25 miles south of Cancun in Puerto Morelos and was traveling northwest at a speed of between 15 and 20 mph as wind speeds decreased slightly to about 105 mph.

The US National Hurricane Center in Miami warned of a storm surge that could raise water levels up to 13 feet and bring flash flooding inland.

There were no immediate reports of deaths or injuries, but about 39,000 people had been evacuated in the states of Quintana Roo and Yucatan, and about 2,700 people had taken refuge in storm shelters in the two states.

The storm is expected to continue affecting the Mexican coast through the end of the day before veering north toward the US Gulf Coast.

Thousands of Quintana Roo residents and tourists checked into dozens of government shelters to wait out the storm after everyone in the state was put under a 19:00 curfew on Tuesday.

Since Monday, local residents have formed long lines at supermarkets and hardware stores to load up on food and supplies to protect their homes.

Throughout the day Tuesday evacuations of low-lying areas, islands, and the coastline expanded as Delta exploded over warm Caribbean waters, increasing in strength by 80mph in just 24 hours to become a major Category 4 hurricane.

Much of Cancun’s hotel zone was cleared out as guests were bused to inland shelters. In Cancun alone, the government opened 160 shelters. More than 40,000 tourists in Cancun and neighboring resorts were evacuated, the head of the area’s hotel association.

Early Wednesday, some 300 guests and nearly 200 staff from the Fiesta Americana Condesa hotel awoke in the sweltering classrooms of the Technological Institute of Cancun campus where they had been moved the day before.

All of the windows had been covered with plywood so they couldn’t see what was happening, but they said the howling winds started around 02:00 and there had been heavy rain.

The power – and with it the air conditioning – had been knocked out early Wednesday so it was steamy as tourists awoke from the used cell phone lights to get up and make their way for the first cup of coffee.

State tourism officials said more than 40,000 tourists were in Quintana Roo, a fraction of what would normally be there. Delta’s damage comes on top of months of pandemic-induced lockdown that has devastated the state’s tourism industry.

At the Cancun Convention Center, 400 tourists from hotels and rental properties bunked for the night.

Delta was forecast to spend several hours lashing the Yucatan Peninsula before moving into the Gulf of Mexico and re-strengthening before a strike on the US Gulf Coast later in the week.

Mexico put the commander of its navy in charge of the federal response. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador said Tuesday that 5,000 federal troops and emergency personnel were being made available in Quintana Roo to aid in storm efforts.

Local and state officials urged residents to move to shelters.

The Yucatan peninsula was hit on the weekend by Hurricane Gamma, a smaller storm that nonetheless damaged property and forced restaurants and attractions to close, including the famed Chichen Itza pyramids.

Cancun https://mexicanroutes.com/cancun/ Mon, 29 May 2017 00:09:31 +0000 http://mexicanroutes.com/?p=58 Cancún is a city on the northeast coast of the Yucatán Peninsula in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Cancun is located on the Caribbean Sea and is one of Mexico’s easternmost points.

Cancun is a world-known important tourist destination and beach resort in Mexico, situated just north of Mexico’s Caribbean coast resort band known as the Riviera Maya.

Cancun is well known for its white-sand beaches and turquoise sea, its reef biodiversity life, lagoons, cenotes, and forest, and its ancestral Mayan cultural wealth.

Great air and ground transportation connectivity, and the highest level of hotel infrastructure have positioned Cancún, Quintana Roo, as the most awarded Mexican tourist destination in the world.

Cancun is a leading resort city in Latin America.

Cancún was the first tourist development of the National Tourism Fund (FONATUR).

Since its opening in the early seventies, a flow of travelers from around the world started to explore its 23 km coastline and enjoy the quality of its hotels that still set the highest hospitality standards for the rest of the world.

Besides having the best beaches in the world, you can enjoy exciting water activities in Cancún such as diving, snorkeling, kayaking, sailing on a Catamaran or speed boat, flyboarding, windsurfing, and paddle boarding in the Caribbean Sea or the Nichupte Lagoon.

Climate & Weather in Cancun

Cancún has a tropical climate, specifically a tropical wet and dry climate, with few temperature differences between seasons, but pronounced rainy and dry seasons.

The city is warm year-round and moderated by onshore trade winds, with an annual mean temperature of 27.1°C. Unlike inland areas of the Yucatán Peninsula, sea breezes restrict high temperatures from reaching 35 °C on most afternoons.

Annual rainfall is around 1,340 millimeters, falling on 115 days per year.

More temperate conditions occur from November to February with occasional refreshing northerly breezes, it is drier and becomes hotter in March and April. It is hottest from May to September, due to its proximity to the Caribbean and Gulf humidity is high year-round, especially during hurricane season (averages close to 70% on rain-free days).

The Hotel Zone juts into the Caribbean Sea, it is surrounded by ocean, therefore, daytime temperatures are around 1-2°C less and wind speeds are higher than at the airport located some distance inland, which is the official meteorological station for Cancún.

Thanks to the Yucatán current continually bringing warm water from further south, the sea temperature is always very warm, with lows of 26 °C in winter and highs of 29°C in summer.

Hurricanes

The tropical storm season lasts from May to December, the rainy season extends into January with peak precipitation in October. February to early May tends to be drier with only occasional scattered showers.

Cancún is located in one of the main Caribbean hurricane impact areas. Although large hurricanes are rare, they have struck near Cancún in recent years, with Hurricane Wilma in 2005 being the largest.

Hurricane Gilbert made a devastating direct hit on Cancún in September 1988 and the tourist hotels needed to be rebuilt.

In both cases, federal, state, and municipal authorities were well prepared to deal with most of the effects on tourists and local residents.

Hurricane Dean in 2007 also made its mark on the city of Cancún.

Hurricane Gilbert – 1988

1988’s Hurricane Gilbert was the second most intense hurricane ever observed in the Atlantic basin. It landed on the Yucatán peninsula after crossing over the island of Cozumel.

In the Cancún region, a loss of $87 million USD due to a decline in tourism was estimated for the months of October, November, and December in 1988.

Hurricane Wilma – 2005

On October 21, 2005, Hurricane Wilma made landfall on Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula as a powerful Category 4 hurricane, with strong winds in excess of 240 km/h.

The hurricane’s eye first passed over the island of Cozumel and then made an official landfall near Playa del Carmen in the state of Quintana Roo at around midnight on October 22 EDT with winds near 230 km/h.

Portions of the island of Cozumel experienced the calm eye of Wilma for several hours with some blue skies and sunshine visible at times. The eye slowly drifted northward, with the center passing just to the west of Cancún, Quintana Roo.

Hurricane Dean – 2007

Two years later, in 2007, Hurricane Dean made landfall as a Category 5 storm in Majahual, 310 km to the south of Cancún. Fierce winds at the edge of Dean’s impact cone stripped sand off 12.1 km of beaches from Punta Cancún to Punta Nizuc.

The authorities asked tourism operators to suspend sending tourists to Cancún while Hurricane Dean was approaching but did ask airlines to send empty planes, which were then used to evacuate tourists already there.

Origin of the Name & Heraldry

Place names

The name Cancún, Cancum, or Cankun first appears on 18th-century maps. The meaning of Cancún is unknown, and it is also unknown whether the name is of Maya origin.

In older English-language documents, the city’s name is sometimes spelled “Cancoon”, an attempt to convey the sound of the name.

If it is of Maya origin, possible translations include “Place/Seat/Throne of the Snake” or “Enchanted Snake”.

As documented in the earliest colonial sources, the island of Cancún was originally known to its Maya inhabitants as Nizuc (in Yucatec Maya meaning either “promontory” or “point of grass”. Snake iconography was prevalent at the pre-Columbian site of Nizuc.

There are two possible translations of Cancún, based on the Mayan pronunciation “kaan kun”.

 • The first translation is “nest of snakes”.
 • The second version and less accepted is “place of the gold snake”.

Shield

The shield of the municipality of Benito Juárez, which represents the city of Cancún, was designed by the Californian Mexican-American artist Joe Vera. It is divided into three parts:

 • Blue color symbolizes the Caribbean Sea
 • Yellow is the color of the sand
 • Red is the color of the sun with its rays

History & Timeline of Cancun

Prehispanic era

During the Classic and the post-Classic periods, the Maya maintained a commercial network from Laguna de Terminos to Honduras.

For this activity, they established maritime routes whose trajectories crossed the entire coast of the current Mexican state of Quintana Roo. That’s why they built buildings by the sea to carry out commercial exchanges, as well as to monitor and help navigation.

According to archaeological studies, the sites El Meco, Yamil Lu’um, and El Rey were inhabited points until the 16th century. In the Chronicles of the Indies was described a town with the name of Belma, probably it was El Meco.

Background to the construction of the city

The area that now includes Cancun and Isla Mujeres was explored by Francisco Hernández de Córdoba in 1517. The first geographical reference to Cancun or Cancuen Island is found on a map drawn by the cartographer Juan de Dios González in the year 1776.

During the 19th century and in the year 1841, Captain Richard Owen Smith, on a tour of the Caribbean and Central America, indicates in his logbook the existence of pre-Hispanic buildings at the north and south ends of the island.

It follows that the sites in question are El Rey, Yamil Lu’um, and El Meco.

The American John Lloyd Stephens and the British Frederick Catherwood described in 1842, although very briefly, the existence of two buildings located in Punta Kancum. They probably referred to the temples that are located in Yamil Lu’um, in the Hotel Zone.

..In the afternoon we headed towards the mainland, passing through the island of Kancum, which is a strip of land covered with dunes and some stone buildings that are still visible. All this coast is covered with rock reefs with one or another narrow channel, which allows passage to the canoes, to enter to find shelter, but at night it is very dangerous to pretend. We had very good wind, but since the next point was still quite a distance away, the skipper (captain) determined to anchor at four o’clock in the afternoon to the lee of Punta Nizuc..

Alice and Augustus Le Plongeon visited the island in 1877 and 1878.

They mentioned the existence of a site they call Ciudad Nizucte in the far south, possibly the current site of El Rey because in the surroundings of Punta Nizuc, there are no vestiges of other pre-Hispanic settlements have been found.

Then, in 1895, the American William H. Holmes arrived on the island with the Allison V. Armor expedition and mentioned the existence of numerous buildings of identical appearance to those on neighboring islands and on the continent.

He probably referred to the same sites: El Meco, Yamil Lu’um, and El Rey.

20 century

In the years after the Conquest, much of the Maya population died off or left as a result of disease, warfare, piracy, and famines, leaving only small settlements on Isla Mujeres and Cozumel Island.

When the development of the area as a resort was started on January 23, 1970, Isla Cancún had only three residents, caretakers of the coconut plantation of Don José de Jesús Lima Gutiérrez, who lived on Isla Mujeres.

Some 117 people lived in nearby Puerto Juarez, a fishing village and military base.

Due to the reluctance of investors to gamble in an unknown area, the Mexican government had to finance the first nine hotels.

The first hotel financed was the Hyatt Cancún Caribe, but the first hotel built was the Playa Blanca, which later became a Blue Bay hotel. It is now named Temptation Resort. At the time it was an elite destination, famous for its virgin white-sand beaches.

The city began as a tourism project in 1974 as an Integrally Planned Center, a pioneer of FONATUR (National Fund for Tourism Development), formerly known as INFRATUR.

Since then, it has undergone a comprehensive transformation from being a fisherman’s island surrounded by virgin forest and undiscovered shores to being one of the two most well-known Mexican resorts, along with Acapulco.

The World Tourism Organization (WTO), through its foundation UNWTO-Themis, awarded the Best of the Best award “for excellence and good governance” to the Trust for Tourism Promotion of Cancun on February 3, 2007.

This award ensured Cancún the ongoing support of the Department of Education and Knowledge Management of the WTO.

Most ‘Cancunenses’ are from Yucatán and other Mexican states. A growing number are from the rest of the Americas and Europe.

The municipal authorities have struggled to provide public services for the constant influx of people, as well as limiting squatters and irregular developments, which now occupy an estimated ten to fifteen percent of the mainland area on the fringes of the city.

In the 21st century, Cancún had largely avoided the bloodshed associated with the trade of illegal drugs but is known for its retail drug sales to tourists as well as for being a center of money laundering.

The links with Cancún date from the 1990s and early 2000s, when the area was controlled by the Juárez and Gulf drug cartels.

In recent years Los Zetas, a group that broke away from the Gulf Cartel, has taken control of many smuggling routes through the Yucatán, according to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration.

The 2010 United Nations Climate Change Conference was held in Cancún from November 29 to December 10 of that year.

Tourist Attractions & Sightseeing in Cancun

Apart from the island tourist zone, the Mexican residential section of the city, the downtown part of which is known as “El Centro,” follows a master plan that consists of “super manzanas” (“superblocks”), giant trapezoids with a central, open, non-residential area cut in by u-shaped residential streets.

These open centers usually have walkways and ‘sidewalks’ around a central garden park, football fields, a library, etc., which make the mainland “Mexican” Cancún bicycle-friendly.

The residential roads of central or ‘Mainland’ Cancún, U-shaped, and cul-de-sacs, insulate housing from the noise and congestion of the main flow of traffic.

Mainland Cancún has a central market that resembles an outlet mall, and colorful buildings on a pedestrian city block.

 • Ave. Tulum is the main north-south artery, connecting downtown to the airport, which is some 30 km south of downtown.
 • Ave. Tulum is bisected by Ave. Cobá.
 • East of Ave. Tulum, Cobá becomes Ave. Kukulcan serves as the primary road through the 7-shaped hotel zone.
 • Ave. Tulum ends on the north side at Ave. Paseo José López Portillo which connects to the main highway west to Chichén Itzá and Mérida.
 • Another major north-south road is Ave. Bonampak which runs roughly parallel to Ave. Tulum.

The main ferry to Isla Mujeres is located in Puerto Juarez, on Ave. Paseo José López Portillo.

To save on the cost of installing sewer systems and other public services, the design of much of the rest of the city reverted to the grid plan after Hurricane Gilbert in 1988.

The newest upper-middle-class residential areas reflect the original plan but are much less intimate.

Less expensive developments are composed almost entirely of identical one- or two-story small row houses, sometimes built around interior plazas or 4 story apartment blocks.

Until recently, most mainland buildings were four stories or shorter; since 2005, there has been an influx of condominium and luxury retail and office space concentrated along Ave. Bonampak.

Cancún’s Mainland or Downtown area has diverged from the original plan; development is scattered around the city.

The remaining undeveloped beach and lagoon front areas outside the hotel zone are now under varying stages of development, in Punta Sam and Puerto Juarez to the north, continuing along Bonampak and south toward the airport along Boulevard Donaldo Colosio.

One development abutting the hotel zone is Puerto Cancún, also Malecon Cancún is another large development.

Cancun Airport’s old Control Tower Memorial

Despite being a young city, Cancun has a memorial monument of its foundation on a replica of the old Airport Control Tower that resembles its own date of foundation.

The original Control Tower was a provisional wooden structure to satisfy the operative needs of the recently created airport.

Some documents of the city mention that at that time there were no other formal buildings constructed in the city, possibly the first built structure in Cancun’s recent history.

The old airport was located in the same part of the city that today corresponds to Kabah Avenue.

The tower is 15 meters tall, has a staircase of 45 steps, and has a base dimension of 5 x 5 meters. The memorial was first built in 2002, with the donations of Aerocaribe, a local airline, but the structure was damaged after Hurricane Wilma in 2005.

After the claims of the local people asking to rebuild the tower memorial, a new version was built in 2010, which was later abandoned without proper maintenance until Woox Pinturas, another local wood maintenance company, made a donation to restore the structure to its original appearance.

Nightlife in Cancun

It is not possible to have vacation time in Cancún without being caught by its nightlife, which flows in clubs where international DJs and acrobatic performances can be found.

In addition, the fun can go beyond the shore and you can enjoy parties on board a pirate boat or on a trajinera.

Beaches in Cancun

Cancun beaches are mainly located along the Kukulkan Boulevard in the Hotel Zone.

If you travel with children, or elderly people, or in the case that you can´t swim very well, we suggest you choose a hotel located between kilometers 3 to 8.5. On those specific beaches, ocean waves are soft as they are located in front of Isla Mujeres which allows the formation of a bay called Bahía de Isla Mujeres.

On the other hand, if you stay downtown, you will be able to find 11 public beaches such as Perlas, Langostas, Tortugas, Delfines, and Chac Mol.

Most of them have been granted the Blue Flag eco-label which certifies coast destinations that have reached top standards in water quality, environmental management, safety, services, and environmental education activities.

Cancun nearby Archaeological sites

There are some small Mayan vestiges of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization in Cancún. El Rey (Las Ruinas del Rey) is located in the Hotel Zone. El Meco, a more substantial site, is found on the mainland just outside the city limits on the road north to Punta Sam.

Close by in the Riviera Maya and the Grand Costa Maya, there are sites such as Cobá and Muyil (Riviera) the small Polé (now Xcaret), and Kohunlich, Kinichná, Dzibanché, Oxtankah, Tulum, and Chacchoben, in the south of the state. Chichén Itzá is in the neighboring state of Yucatán.

Gastronomy & Cuisine in Cancun

When it comes to food, Cancún offers a culinary experience through the fusion of Mexican and international flavors which are masterfully developed by the best chefs in the world.

There are restaurants that have been granted the 5 Diamonds of the American Automobile Association and have been recognized by the Michelin Guide.

Transportation in Cancun

Cancún is served by the Cancún International Airport with an added main runway that commenced operation in October 2009. It has many flights to North America, Central America, South America, Asia, and Europe.

It is located in the northeast of the Yucatán Peninsula serving an average of about fifteen million passengers per year. The airport is located around 20 km from the hotel zone, approximately a 20-minute trip by car.

The island of Isla Mujeres is located off the coast and is accessible by ferry from Puerto Juárez.
